The confirmation is that besides predicting well probabilities of measurements, all the intermediate steps before the detector (passing through fields, beam-splitters, etc.) are well-described with the concept of a complex wave possessing magnitude and phase (concept already known to us from e.m. waves). – Sofia Dec 21 '14 at 22:53 @Sofia: While it is possible to describe most of quantum mechanics in terms of wave functions, it is not the most advisable way: It doesn't generalize easily to QFT, it is difficult to explain what spin, angular momentum and the like are, and it lures people into thinking of quantum objects as classical waves.

Some of the energy and momentum is transferred to the electron (this is known as the Compton effect), but both energy and momentum are conserved in such a collision. However, this motion is problematic for a standing wave (for example, a wave on a string), where energy is moving in both directions equally, or for electromagnetic (e.g., light) waves in a vacuum, where the concept of medium does not apply and interaction with a target is the key to wave detection and practical applications.

So energy is also connected to the wave property of matter. The square well has many variations — you can have square wells that are symmetric around the origin, that have infinite walls, that have finite walls, and more. As with the cards, it is possible to estimate how much ambiguity can be explained by such ignorance, and compare it with the larger amount of ambiguity allowed by standard theory. This would certainly answer the question of fairness.
