It’s a simple decision to include rather than exclude, for all of our mutual benefit, with no real risks involved. The 15 selections are mostly recognizable pieces—“Southern Moon,” “Louisiana Man,” “Stormy Horizons,” and “Midnight Special.” Also featured are performances of the almost forgotten James O’Gwynn country tearjerker “Talk To Me Lonesome Heart,” the Everly Brothers’ “Long Time Gone,” and the Adam Tanner instrumental “Twilite Schottische.” Evening Shade is an engaging assortment of vocal duets reminiscent of the Blue Sky Boys, the Monroe Brothers, and many others. (Adam Tanner, 350 Sheppard Branch Rd., Weaverville, NC 28787, www.twilitebroadcasters.com .) The Bibb City Ramblers are a unique string band based in Columbus, Ga., and their music is a type of new age acoustic music with jazz, ragtime, and bluegrass influences.

The Tony Rice Unit is a great example on how this kind of arrangement benefited bluegrass music. Plans are in the works for many more performances at key historic Civil War sites over the next two years, throughout the remainder of the 150th year anniversary of the American Civil War. Many other composers, most famously William Henry Fry and George Frederick Bristow, supported the idea of an American classical style, though their works were very European in orientation.

She, too, is one of America's finest song writers with more than a few classic songs to her credit in the fields of country, pop, and bluegrass. But in addition to amazing food, this downtown Calhoun event includes the Georgia String Band Festival and the Gordon County Fiddlers Convention. I recall that back when Ricky Skaggs released his first major label country material in the early ‘80s, a lot of bluegrass fans were up in arms, and were quick to accuse him of selling out.

They also sing almost entirely in the Czech language, making their music more accessible to wider audiences in their own country. And really, when have we ever needed laughs like that more?” When Vance Gilbert returns to the Rose Garden Coffeehouse in Mansfield at 8 p.m. Playing an eclectic mix of songs about love and loss, the odd original, and gospel, The Lonesome Town Painters would be equally at home in the barroom on Saturday night and the next morning’s church service, comfortable treading that fine line between perdition and salvation.

Nevertheless, the African-rooted element in jazz is only one of its key components. The International Bluegrass Music Awards Show is the biggest night on the bluegrass calendar.
