One does not have the right to arbitrarily take his own life. At baptism, where we are publicly ingrafted into the covenant, it is said that we must be born again. Richard Hays omits this model and comes up with his own four modes of moral discourse in the New Testament: rules, principles (instead of Gustafson’s ‘ideal model’), paradigms and the ‘symbolic world’ use of Scripture. If finiteness cannot be without guilt because it is mixed with freedom and stands under ideal possibilities, it cannot be without sin (in the more exact sense of the term) because man makes pretensions of being absolute in his finiteness.
