Its legal codes do not go much beyond negatives because only minimal standards can be legally enforced. By public officials, he means those who are in policy making positions in public institutions; in other words, strategic decision makers in the government, including the national security arena.

Conversely, I expect non-Christians to have non-Christian ethics. Hughes some justice, that most moral philosophers and theologians, including those who are sympathetic to this overall approach, in the end are unwilling to depart very far from the received wisdom of the society or Church with which they identify, and that their theoretical accounts are tailored to defend the status quo. This ties in their actions to morality generally. According to a secular philosophy, we should treat all morals as relativebut in practice, even secular society treats some abstract values (such as justice, love, and courage) as consistently moral.

The victories of democracy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were triumphs of an alliance of merchants and workers over the aristocrats who defended their position behind the bulwarks of feudalism and monarchy. This has begun to lead to the loss of forests; and the loss of forests will eventually leave in its wake disastrous erosion, siltation, floods, and local climate change. Her articles have appeared in the Hastings Center Report, The Journal of Philosophy and Medicine and Ethics and Behavior.

To make valid statistical conclusions large numbers of patients have to be randomly selected from those willing to take part in the trials and those who, with hindsight, fall into the most or least successful groups do so by chance. The good life is this, that God has given us peace on the cross through the blood of Jesus Christ. Moral perfection is the goal of Christian reflection on ethics. "Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful" (Lk. 6:36). The authors are not loathe to point directions regarding specific moral problems, but their project does not attempt to address the impressive list of various issues which has to be in the course of spelling out implications of the presumptions.

Each ethic makes a needed contribution; each has biblical expressions; and moral vision is critical for the other three. That this circle is not vicious depends on the fact of revelation, which creates the reality of both. I remember a friend who was afraid of heights. Recovering a Christian Worldview, that is not a proper purpose of the church. The alternative to these dark prognoses is, in Sandra Postel's words, 'a global effort to lighten humanity's load on the earth'.24 This has to be in terms of addressing the gross disparities of wealth, of turning from a consumption to a recycling economy, and tackling population growth.

There is the utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill, centered in the "greatest happiness of the greatest number" and the measurement of all courses of action by their usefulness toward this end. Fideism, or, as Paulsen designated it, the Irrationalism of many Protestants, also denies the ability of reason to furnish certainty in matters relating to God and religion. What would be appropriate to say or do? 2. For feminism is, secondly, a social and cultural movement concerned with the liberation of women.

For example, we would like to say that a baby should never be delivered so prematurely that it has no chance to live. There are other features that can be seen as common on conceptual or logical grounds. John Calvin (d. 1564) shared much of Luther's theological presuppositions, but he gave greater emphasis to the will, both in God and in human beings.

The church has been infamous in most eras for insisting on painstaking compliance to unimportant details of personal "holiness" while saying nothing about cruel exploitation of other races and the poor. 28 H. I Timothy 2:1-2 presents a clear guideline for how we should pray for our government officials, regardless of their political platform. "I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings, and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
