The popular Yiddish theater was ignored or mentioned derisively as it had been in the previous generation; war was regularly declared against the “plague” of theatrical shund. A group of essays, reprinted from the Illustra- ted American, Town topics and other periodicals, written on subjects pertaining to the theatre, act- ing, criticism; and evaluations of plays, actors, playwrights, and a variety of other topics. The Kitchen Sink drama, in contrast, moved the action and emotion of the theater from depictions of the public space of people’s lives into the most intimate of settings.
